The Rough
From the epic Beowulf, the author gives Beowulf a great sense of strength during the battle between Grendel and Beowulf.
1.“This plainly he saw then
Who with mirth of mood malice no little Had wrought in the past on the race of the earth-men
(To God he was hostile), that his body would fail him,
But Hygelac's hardy henchman and kinsman
Held him by the hand; hateful to other
Grendel is sorely wounded.
Was each one if living. A body-wound suffered
The direful demon, damage incurable
Was seen on his shoulder, his sinews were shivered,
His body did burst.”
2.”This early discovered
The master of malice, that in middle-earth’s regions,
’Neath the whole of the heavens, no hand-grapple greater
In any man else had he ever encountered:”
3.”The liege-kinsman worthy
Of Hygelac minded his speech of the evening,
Stood he up straight and stoutly did seize him.”
Beowulf shows great strength when he first encounters Grendel. He was able to withstand Grendel's powerful strength that Grendel himself felt scared for his life. ”This early discovered The master of malice, that in middle-earth’s regions,’Neath the whole of the heavens, no hand-grapple greater In any man else had he ever encountered:” Grendel has never encountered Beowulf and his great strength before, a man powerful enough to match him. Beowulf now in hand-to-hand combat with Grendel has a promise to uphold.
Beowulf remembers the boast he made back in Heorot, and with that he engaged Grendel with all his might.”The liege-kinsman worthy Of Hygelac minded his speech of the evening, Stood he up straight and stoutly did seize him.” He seized Grendel with his own two hands and now both Grendel and Beowulf now struggle to overcome the other. In the end only one is victorious and He’s name was Beowulf by ripping the arm of Grendel right out of their sockets.
Grendel now badly injured knows that his end is coming. His arm has been completely torn off and now faces the fear of bleeding out.“This plainly he saw then Who with mirth of mood malice no little Had wrought in the past on the race of the earth-men (To God he was hostile), that his body would fail him, But Hygelac's hardy henchman and kinsman Held him by the hand; hateful to other Grendel is sorely wounded. Was each one if living. A body-wound suffered The direful demon, damage incurable Was seen on his shoulder, his sinews were shivered, His body did burst.” Beowulf showed how strong he was by ripping off Grendel’s arm, and Grendel knows his death is to come. upon reaching his dwelling, he is greeted by his mother who swears to enact revenge on those responsible.
